CATL Released the World’s First 9MWh Energy Storage System
On May 7, CATL unveiled TENER Stack, the world’s first mass-produced 9MWh ultra-large-capacity energy storage system solution, at the Battery Energy Storage Exhibition in Munich, Germany. It has achieved breakthroughs in system capacity, deployment flexibility, safety and transportation efficiency, marking a new era of large storage technology.

1.Breakthrough in capacity, 20% optimization of overall station construction cost
TENER Stack adopts CATL‘ s high energy density batteries, which have a zero-degradation characteristic for five years. Compared with the traditional 20-foot container system, TENER Stack’s volume utilization rate is increased by 45%, and energy density is increased by 50%. Its stand-alone energy storage capacity is up to 9MWh, capable of charging approximately 150 home electric vehicles or powering an average German home for six years.
TENER Stack’s high capacity also creates significant economic value. Deploying 800MWh of energy storage capacity via TENER Stack requires nearly one-third fewer containers than a conventional 6MWh system, while increasing land use efficiency by 40%, resulting in an overall 20% savings in power plant construction costs.
2.Breaking through transportation constraints: complying with 99% of global market regulations
In order to meet the 36-ton legal weight limit for land transportation in many countries around the world, NDT has developed the “Two in One” modular design, which strictly controls the weight of each half-height box to be below 36 tons, ensuring compliance with the transportation regulations of 99% of global markets.
In addition, the innovative split design can be adapted to a variety of standard transportation modes, which not only significantly reduces the waiting time, but also reduces the special transportation cost by 35%. With a lower center of gravity and improved flexibility, the TENER Stack can also easily cross bridges, country roads and other special transportation scenarios, demonstrating the advantages of its innovative structural design.
3.Upgraded safety standards: fire resistance up to 2 hours
Against the backdrop of growing concern for the safety of energy storage plants, the TENER Stack has increased the sensitivity of the gas sensor by 40%, thereby improving the response speed of the trigger suppression system by 35%.
In addition, the new 3-layer insulation design improves fire resistance to 2 hours; the system also complies with IEEE693 seismic standard, and is able to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake and a magnitude 5 hurricane.

As of the end of November last year, CATL’ s energy storage system products have been applied in more than 1,700 projects around the world, covering all climatic zones and diverse operating environments. The heavy release of TENER Stack will better help CATL’ s global partners accelerate the energy transition and provide more power safely and sustainably in a smaller footprint.
“TENER Stack redefines the industry benchmark with its ultra-large capacity, flexible deployment, extreme reliability and silent operation.” Zhao Zhongsong, CTO of Energy Storage Division of CATL Europe, said, “What we deliver is not just an energy storage product, but a globally scalable solution for energy transition. 9MWh is not the end of the line in terms of capacity and space, and every future breakthrough in energy density will unleash greater energy value in a smaller space.”
