CATL started the 4th-generation LFP material project 

Recently, the 4th-generation LFP material project of CATL with a total investment of 5.6 billion yuan started construction in Yichang Hi-tech Zone. According to the person in charge of the project construction, the project will adopt the industry-leading fourth-generation LFP technology, and it is proposed to build 3 workshops with an annual output of 150,000 tons of LFP with the largest single capacity in China, which can realize an annual output value of 14.5 billion yuan after reaching full production.

The start of the project directly refers to the fourth generation of LFP products – high-pressure dense LFP. High-pressure dense LFP has compaction density of 2.6g/cm3 and above, by improving the filling amount of active materials in the unit volume, can realize the double enhancement of energy density and charging times, can be applied to medium and high-end power and energy storage battery products. Compared with the traditional LFP products, high-pressure dense LFP needs to be added on the basis of the traditional products of the secondary sintering process, put forward higher requirements to the preparation of the precursor iron phosphate, material size particles of the ratio , with certain technical barriers. At present, very few manufacturers can realize the mass production of high-pressure solid lithium iron phosphate.

The new-generation battery cathode material project is another major project in Yichang, which is additionally laid out by CATL following the 32 billion yuan whole-chain integrated industrial park. By opening up the key links in the manufacture of LFP materials, it builds up the whole industry chain closed loop as “phosphate ore – raw materials – precursors – anode materials –Battery recycling”.
